The benefits of infrared saunas and the working principle
Don't you love the feeling you get when you turn your face up to the sun and let your skin bask in the warmth? What a relaxing feeling!
Or, think of the heat lamp you use in your bathroom after a shower. Doesn't that feel good? If you enjoy those sensations, you'll love the benefits of infrared saunas.
When you first enter the infrared sauna cabin, the first thing you will immediately experience is the feeling of rejuvenating heat. This is a heat that is naturally occurring through the process of radiation. For an example of that kind of heat, just think about the people who seek out the experience of getting a suntan out of doors during a winter holiday in the mountains.
They love the experience of getting their tan while they are in the snow. They don't seem to mind that the outdoor temperature is near freezing, because they are enjoying the feel of having their skin heated by the golden rays of the sun. But infrared rays are better for your skin.
It's important to understand how infrared rays works. Your skin is the largest organ of your body, and if you are exposing it to these extremes of temperature, then you certainly want to be educated about the benefits of infrared saunas! The sun rays themselves are not warm. But within the spectrum of light that reaches your skin, certain frequencies do vibrate at a very high rate. The energy created by these high frequencies is what causes the feeling of warmth when they touch your skin. The layers of your skin are energized at a molecular level. That's what generates the heat and that's the working principle the infrared sauna is based upon. But infrared saunas exclude the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays, which cause sunburn and make our skin turn red if we stay out in the sun for too long. We can enjoy infrared rays without those dangerous rays because the infrared sauna uses the rays at the far end of the spectrum.
Let's look at our physiologic responses to heat and cold in order to better understand the benefits of infrared saunas. Humans are warm-blooded creatures, and we are pretty capable of adapting to a varying range of surrounding temperatures. But the human body itself stays at a constant temperature of around 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit in order to maintain our physical and mental performances at an optimum level. What happens if our body gets too warm or too cool? It has a built-in thermostat that lets our skin work naturally by accumulating warmth in the winter and dissipating heat into the air during the summer. Shivering is our skin's involuntary response to lack of heat, and sweating is the way it dispels it. But the most important tool it utilizes for that purpose occurs during the circulation of blood within our veins. During elevation of body temperature our brain will organize blood transportation to arms, legs, and our skin. By pumping the blood away from our thoracic organs, the body disperses heat. In colder environments, our bodies retain more blood in the innermost parts of the body, thus keeping warm our most important organs like the heart, liver, and kidneys. That's where the benefits of infrared saunas come into play.
The infrared sauna is a wonderfully soothing yet effective way to make our bodies work to cool down. Our body receives the message from the brain to redistribute blood, but we avoid the negative side effects of ultraviolet sun rays. With an infrared sauna, we call upon only the high end of the light spectrum, and these rays are not harmful to our skin. There is no heat or steam that pelts your skin. Your body creates the heat itself because the light energy is penetrating the skin to a depth of two to three inches. There is no way to achieve this effect that is more healthful. You are not only benefiting your skin, you are also stimulating your entire cardiovascular system, just like a workout that affects blood redistribution. And because the light rays penetrate so deeply, they reach and relax your muscle tissues, as well.
It's wise to drink water-nothing else-during your infrared sauna session. The pores of your skin will be cleansed, and your body will become thirsty through the effects of the heat that your skin generates. Please do realize that during this relaxing experience you need to keep your tissues hydrated.
When you experience an infrared sauna you will agree that it's like having a real total body work out. The energy of the penetrating rays even stimulates the skin to sweat. But you will be sitting still in tranquility, enjoying the relaxation and warmth of the rejuvenating sauna.
